It serves as the capital and largest city of the Antwerp Province. The city is the most populous municipality in Belgium, housing 565,039 people. Its wider metropolitan area is even larger, with over 1.2 million residents. This makes it the second-largest metropolitan area in the country, following Brussels. Antwerp is a vital global hub for both commerce and culture. In 2020, the Globalization and World Cities Research Network classified it as a Gamma + Global City. This status recognizes its high level of international importance.

The geography of Antwerp is defined by the Scheldt river.

This river flows directly through the city. The Westerschelde estuary connects the river to the North Sea. This water connection is essential for the city's massive economy. Antwerp sits north of Brussels and south of the Dutch border. The Port of Antwerp is a massive maritime gateway. It ranks as the second-largest port in Europe, after Rotterdam. Globally, it sits within the top 20 largest ports.

The city is also a world leader in the diamond trade. Beyond shipping, Antwerp is a deeply diverse and cosmopolitan place. It is home to people from approximately 180 different nationalities. As of 2019, more than 50% of the population had a parent born outside of Belgium. One notable community is the Jewish population. Antwerp is one of only two cities in Europe with a significant Haredi population. The other city is London, specifically the Stamford Hill neighbourhood.

Archaeological excavations near the river found pottery from the 2nd and 3rd centuries. The Germanic Franks settled the area in the 4th century. The city's oldest building is Het Steen.

This castle has origins in the Carolingian period of the 9th century. In the 11th century, the famous leader Godfrey of Bouillon served as Margrave of Antwerp. By the 16th century, the city began a massive period of growth. It became a central part of the Low Countries during the Spanish Fury and the Dutch Revolt.

The 16th century marked Antwerp's "Golden Age." During this era, the city became the richest in Europe. It grew to be the second-largest city north of the Alps. In 1531, the city opened its Stock Exchange.

This was the world's first building designed specifically for commodity exchange. The city became a center for many different goods. Portuguese ships brought spices like pepper and cinnamon from Asia. Antwerp also became the sugar capital of Europe. It imported raw sugar from plantations in the Americas and Asia. Skilled workers refined this sugar for export to places like Germany. At the start of the 16th century, Antwerp managed about 40% of all world trade.

This era of prosperity was not always peaceful. The religious Reformation caused violent riots in 1566. During the Dutch Revolt, the city faced heavy conflict with Spain. In 1576, Spanish soldiers carried out the "Spanish Fury."

This event resulted in the massacre of 8,000 citizens. Much of the city was burnt and damaged. Later, in 1648, the Treaty of Münster closed the Scheldt to navigation. This decision temporarily destroyed much of Antwerp's trading activity. It was not until 1863 that these restrictions were lifted.

Modern Antwerp remains a vital part of the global system. The city is divided into various districts.
