It sits in the Atlantic Ocean in a region known as Macaronesia. The island is positioned off the northwestern coast of Africa and is a long distance from Europe. Geographically, it lies southeast of Tenerife and west of Fuerteventura.

As the third-largest island in the archipelago, it is also the second-most populous. The island is home to approximately 862,893 people as of early 2023. Its capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is the largest city in the Canary Islands.

This city is also the ninth-largest city in all of Spain.

The island's physical shape is formed by complex volcanic processes.

Most of its volume was created during the Miocene period between 14 and 9 million years ago. Scientists call this the "Old Cycle." During this 200,000-year period, eruptions emitted about 1,000 cubic kilometers of material. This material was mostly fissural alkali basalt, but also included trachytes and phonolites. Following this, a 4-million-year period of erosion shaped the land. This was followed by the "Roque Nublo cycle" between 4.5 and 3.4 million years ago. This second cycle emitted about 150 cubic kilometers of material and included violent pyroclastic flows. A third, more recent cycle began roughly 2.8 million years ago and is considered active. The most recent eruptions occurred about 2,000 years ago.

Geological shifts have caused the island to move vertically over time. Changes in the island's volume and weight have caused it to rise and sink. During erosive periods, the island rose above previous sea levels. During eruptive periods, the weight caused it to sink. This process created "fossil beaches" visible in the northern cliffs. These oscillations reached up to 100 meters relative to sea level. For example, the highest known point is in the Bay of El Confital at 100 meters above current sea level. Conversely, subaerial materials have been found in wells 150 meters below sea level near La Aldea.

The history of Gran Canaria involves ancient inhabitants and European conquest. The North African Canarii lived on the island, possibly arriving as early as 500 BC. In the 15th century, the Crown of Castile attempted to conquer the island. After a five-year war, the conquest was completed on April 29, 1483, under Queen Isabella I. During this conflict, the Canarian queen Abenchara was captured and imprisoned. The capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, was founded on June 24, 1478, by Juan Rejón. In 1492, Christopher Columbus anchored at the Port of Las Palmas during his first voyage to the Americas. Later, many Iberian migrants, including conversos of Jewish origin, moved to the island.

Gran Canaria features a diverse range of weather patterns known as microclimates.

Under the Köppen climate classification, the island has a hot desert climate. This is due to a severe lack of precipitation. The annual rainfall averages only 180 mm, with most falling in cooler months. July, August, and September are typically rainless. While the south is very sunny, the mountainous areas can experience frost or snow.

Average daytime highs range from 20°C in winter to 28°C in summer. The island's vegetation has changed significantly over time. Extensive forests once covered the land but were lost to logging and land use. Forest cover dropped to just 15 percent. However, 20th-century reforestation efforts have helped recover some forest mass on the island's ridges.

Transportation on the island is well-developed to support its large population.

Gran Canaria Airport is the only commercial airport and is one of the busiest in Spain. The island also manages all air traffic control for the Canary Islands. On the roads, the GC1 highway encircles the island.

The Global bus company operates inter-urban services. Sea travel is also common through several important ports. The Port of Las Palmas and the Port of Las Nieves provide ferry services. These connect the island to the Spanish mainland and Tenerife.

Gran Canaria is divided into twenty-one different municipalities.

These smaller areas handle local governance under the Cabildo insular de Gran Canaria. The population is distributed unevenly across these regions. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the most populous municipality with over 380,000 residents. Other large areas include Telde and San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The island's economy and infrastructure are deeply connected to its geography. From the industrial zones in Arinaga to the tourist areas in the south, the landscape shapes how people live. This mix of volcanic history, diverse climate, and busy transport hubs makes the island a central part of the Canary Islands.
