The island was made by volcanic activity long ago. Most of the island comes from eruptions that happened during the Miocene period. These eruptions occurred between 14 and 9 million years ago. This is known as the "Old Cycle."

A second cycle of eruptions happened much later. This is called the "Roque Nublo cycle." It took place between 4.5 and 3.4 million years ago. These eruptions helped form many of the inland peaks. The third cycle of eruptions started about 2.8 million years ago. This cycle is still considered to be active today. The very last eruptions happened about 2000 years ago.

History tells us many interesting stories about this place. Long ago, the North African Canarii lived on the island. They may have arrived as early as 500 BC. In the 1400s, the island was conquered by the Crown of Castile. This happened under Queen Isabella I. The conquest lasted for five years. A local queen named Abenchara was captured during this time. The capital city, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, was founded in 1478. A man named Juan Rejón started the city. In 1492, Christopher Columbus even anchored his ships here. He was on his first trip to the Americas.

Life on the island has many different climates. Most of the island is quite dry and warm. This is because it does not get much rain. The island is actually considered to have a hot desert climate. However, there are many different microclimates to see. The south of the island is very sunny. In the mountains, you might even see frost or snow.

It is one of the busiest airports in Spain. If you want to go by sea, you can use a ferry.

Some ferries go to the Spanish mainland. Others take you to the nearby island of Tenerife. People also use ports like the Port of Las Palmas. These help move goods and people across the ocean.
