The island has a very interesting climate. It is often called the island of eternal spring. The weather is usually mild but quite windy. The sea helps keep the air temperature steady. Sometimes, a sandstorm called a Calima blows in from the Sahara Desert.

This storm brings fine red dust from the desert. It can make the air very dry and hard to see through. During these times, temperatures can rise by about 10 degrees Celsius. The island has 152 different beaches along its shores.

Long ago, the first people lived on the island in caves. They were called the Mahos. Today, people from the island are still called Majoreros. This name comes from the type of goatskin shoes they wore.
