The Large Binocular Telescope is a special tool for looking at space.

It sits on Mount Graham in the Pinaleno Mountains of Arizona. This telescope is part of a larger group called the Mount Graham International Observatory. Scientists use it to see things that are very far away. It is a very important tool for astronomy. The telescope helps us learn more about our universe.

This telescope has a very unique way it works. It uses two large mirrors on one single base. This is why it has the name "binocular." Each of these mirrors is 8.4 meters wide.

When both mirrors work together, they collect a lot of light. They catch about 111 square meters of light in total. This is like having one giant circular telescope. It can see details as if it were 22.8 meters wide. It also uses adaptive optics to fix blurry images from the air.

Many different groups worked together to build this project. It was originally called the "Columbus Project." The project cost around 100 million euro to complete. It was a joint effort between many places. These include the University of Arizona and several groups in Italy. There were also partners from Germany and other parts of the United States.

Italian firms designed the telescope. A company named Ansaldo assembled it in Milan.

Setting up the telescope took several years of work. It was dedicated in October 2004. The first mirror saw light on October 12, 2005. This first light showed a galaxy named NGC 891.

The second mirror was added in January 2006. By January 2008, both mirrors were working together. Their first combined images showed a galaxy called NGC 2770. This galaxy is 88 million light years away from our own Milky Way.

The telescope has seen many amazing things in space. In 2008, it helped find a galaxy cluster named 2XMM J083026+524133. This cluster is over 7 billion light years away. In 2017, it watched the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft as it traveled through space. This spacecraft was sent to study an asteroid. The telescope also helps us see different types of light. It can use instruments like LUCI to see infrared light. This helps us see things that are too cool or hidden for regular light.
