The Gemini Observatory uses two giant telescopes to study the secrets of space.

One telescope is called Gemini North and sits in Hawaii. The other is Gemini South and is located in Chile. These twin telescopes help astronomers see almost the entire sky. They are some of the most advanced tools for seeing light and infrared light.

This allows scientists to learn about everything from our own Solar System to distant galaxies. Because they are in different places, they can look at both the top and bottom of the sky.

To see clearly, these telescopes use a special way it works called adaptive optics. The air around Earth can shake and make stars look blurry. Adaptive optics helps fix this blurring so the images stay sharp.

The telescopes can even use laser guide stars to help with this process. They also use special mirrors with a silver coating to see infrared light well. This light is a type of energy that is invisible to our eyes. These tools help researchers see very faint things that would otherwise be hidden.

Building these massive machines was a huge job that took many years. It cost about 187 million US dollars to build both telescopes. The large mirrors were made from special glass at a plant in New York.

After the glass was made, it was sent to a place near Paris. There, workers ground and polished the mirrors to make them perfect. Gemini North saw its first light in 1999 and began work in 2000. Gemini South saw its first light one year later in 2000.

Many different countries work together to run the observatory. The United States provides about 70 percent of the money needed. Other partners include Canada, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, and the Republic of Korea.

The United Kingdom was once a partner too. They left the group in 2012, but they had actually joined and left before that as well. Now, the telescopes are run remotely from centers in Hilo, Hawaii, and La Serena, Chile. This helps the teams manage the work from a distance.

One of the most exciting tools is the Gemini Planet Imager.

This tool is great at finding exoplanets. An exoplanet is a planet that orbits a star far away from our Sun. These planets are often very faint compared to their bright stars. The Gemini Planet Imager helps scientists see them directly. This helps us understand how planets form and how the universe works on a huge scale.
