The Giant Magellan Telescope is a massive new tool for looking at the stars.

It is being built at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. This site is in the Atacama Desert. This desert is a great place for science because the air is clear. There are very few people living nearby to create light pollution. This helps scientists see the sky much better. The telescope will help us search for life on planets far away. It will also help us learn how chemical elements began in space.

This telescope works by catching light with seven huge mirrors.

These are called primary mirror segments. One mirror sits in the center. Six other mirrors sit in a circle around it. The total area for catching light is 368 square meters. The telescope uses a special design called a Gregorian telescope. It uses adaptive optics to fix blurry images.

These optics use small parts to reshape mirrors 2,000 times every second. This stops the Earth's air from making the stars look shaky.

Building such a large tool takes a very long time. The work on the mirrors began in 2005. The first mirror was finished in the rotating furnace on November 3, 2005. Construction at the actual site in Chile started in 2015. By 2023, all seven primary mirrors had been cast. A company called WSP was hired to manage the building in 2018. The telescope mount is being made in Rockford, Illinois.

This mount is expected to arrive in Chile by the end of 2025.

There are many impressive numbers behind this project. The primary mirror is 25.4 meters wide. The telescope mount will weigh 2,100 tons with its instruments. The project will cost about 2 billion US dollars. It is a team effort by seven different countries. These are Australia, Brazil, Chile, Israel, South Korea, Taiwan, and the United States. The telescope should start working in the early 2030s.

It will have a resolving power 10 times greater than the Hubble Space Telescope.

We can compare this telescope to tools we already know. The Hubble Space Telescope is a famous tool in space. The James Webb Space Telescope is another great tool. The Giant Magellan Telescope will be even more powerful than both. Imagine trying to see a tiny mark on a coin. This telescope could see a mark on a dime from 160 kilometers away. It is like having a super-powered magnifying glass for the whole universe. This will help us see things that were once hidden in the dark.
