The Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope is a giant tool for seeing the universe.

It is located in Green Bank, West Virginia. This telescope is the largest fully steerable radio telescope in the world. This means it can turn to look at many different parts of the sky. It is a very important part of astronomy. Many scientists use it to study space. It even helps find signs of life from other worlds.

The telescope works by catching radio waves from deep space. The big dish is 100 meters wide. It uses an active surface to stay very accurate. This surface has 2,004 aluminum panels on it. There are also 2,209 actuators, which are small motors. These motors move the panels to fix any bending. The dish might sag under its own weight as it moves. The actuators adjust the panels so the dish stays the right shape. This helps the telescope catch high-frequency waves.

This telescope has an interesting history. It began regular science work in 2001. It was built after an older telescope collapsed. That older one was called the 300 Foot Radio Telescope. It began looking at space in October 1961. However, it collapsed on November 15, 1988. A metal part called a gusset plate failed. This caused the whole structure to fall. The new telescope was built to be much stronger.

The Green Bank Telescope is huge and heavy. It weighs 16 million pounds. It is 148 meters tall. That makes it 60% taller than the Statue of Liberty. Because it is so large, local people call it the "Great Big Thing." It sits in a Radio Quiet Zone. This is a special area where people limit radio signals. This helps the telescope hear faint signals from space. Without this quiet area, human signals might hide the stars.

Scientists have found many amazing things with this tool. In 2002, they found three new pulsars. In 2006, they found a giant hydrogen gas bubble. This bubble is 23,000 light years away. Since 2004, they have found 28 new complex molecules. They even found a very massive neutron star in 2019. The telescope also uses a system called ngRADAR. This helps it look at asteroids in our solar system. It is a vital tool for learning about our universe.
