The Green Bank Telescope is in West Virginia.

It is the world's largest steerable radio telescope. This means it can turn to face different parts of the sky. The dish is 100 meters wide. It is 148 meters tall. That is 60% taller than the Statue of Liberty! Because it is so big, locals call it the "Great Big Thing."

The telescope catches radio waves from space. It uses an active surface to stay accurate. This surface has 2,004 aluminum panels. It also has 2,209 actuators. Actuators are small motors that move the panels. These motors fix any bending in the dish. This helps the telescope work well at high frequencies.

The telescope sits in a Radio Quiet Zone. This is a special area where radio signals are limited. This helps the dish hear faint signals from space. Without this quiet area, human signals might hide them. Scientists use the GBT to find new things. They have found new molecules and even a very massive neutron star. They also use it to scan for signals from other worlds.
