Its main part was a giant radio telescope. This telescope had a huge dish. The dish was 305 meters wide. It sat inside a natural sinkhole in the ground.

Scientists used the dish to study space. They used it to look for life from other worlds. They also used it to find objects near Earth. For 53 years, it was the largest telescope of its kind.

Building the telescope was a big job. It was finished in 1963. The dish was made of many small metal panels. Cables held a platform high above the dish. This platform had tools to catch signals from space. But the telescope had a sad end. In 2020, some of the support cables broke. On December 1, the telescope collapsed. The platform fell and crashed into the dish. Now, a new center for learning will be built there.
