Even though people call it a lake, it is actually an estuary. An estuary is a place where fresh water and salt water mix together. This happens because the water connects to the Gulf of Mexico through narrow paths. The water comes from many different rivers like the Tangipahoa and the Tchefuncte.

This mixing creates a special environment for many living things. The water can be very fresh in some spots and salty in others.

The area is filled with many different types of wetlands. There are over 125,000 acres of these wet lands. You can find cypress swamps and forests made of hardwood trees. There are also marshes that can be fresh or brackish. Brackish water is a mix of fresh and salt water.

These wetlands are very important for the local environment. They help support many kinds of plants and animals in the region.

People have lived near this water for a very long time. Indigenous people lived in the area at least 3,500 years ago. They had a name for the lake that meant "wide water." Later, French explorers arrived in the year 1699. They named the lake after Louis Phélypeaux, the comte de Pontchartrain. He was a leader in France during the time of the "Sun King."

This history shows how the area has changed over many centuries.

There are some amazing facts about the lake and its surroundings. The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway is a huge bridge that crosses the water. It is the longest continuous bridge over water in the whole world. You can also see a power line crossing the estuary. The towers for this line are so long they can show the curve of the Earth. The lake sits in several different areas called parishes. These include St. Tammany, Orleans, Jefferson, St. John the Baptist, St. Charles, and Tangipahoa.

Today, many people live near the lake and use it for fun. More than 1.5 million people live in this region. People enjoy activities like fishing or visiting the Southern Yacht Club. However, the lake faces some hard jobs today. Things like oil drilling and big storms can hurt the wetlands. Scientists are working to protect animals like the bald eagle and the alligator snapping turtle. Keeping the water and forests healthy is a big goal for the future.
