The area acts as a massive drainage basin for the land.

This delta works through a natural cycle of building and losing land. The Mississippi River carries sand, clay, and silt down to the coast. When the river reaches the sea, it drops these materials. Over thousands of years, these bits of earth settle to make new land. This process is called a delta cycle. Sometimes the river finds a shorter path to the sea. This movement is called avulsion or delta-switching.

When the river moves, it creates new shapes in the landscape.

Geologists can trace the history of this land back a long way. The formation began with the Mississippi embayment about 100 million years ago. The modern delta has been changing for about 4,500 years. Over time, the river has built different sections called delta lobes.

There have been six major delta complexes in the area. These include the Maringouin delta and the Teche delta. The current shape is known as the Bird's Foot Delta. It formed from the Plaquemines-Balize delta over the last 550 years.

Many people have lived and worked in this changing region. Spanish explorer Alvarez de Pineda reached the river mouth in 1519. Later, France claimed the area in 1682. The United States bought the land in 1803.

People have used the rich soil to farm sugar cane and cotton. The delta is also a busy place for shipping and trade. Today, people also find oil and gas deep under the delta. The Atchafalaya River is a major part of this system too.

Today, more than two million people call the delta home. This area is a gateway for many different cultures. People from France, Spain, and Africa settled here over many years. Other groups like Germans, Italians, and Irish also arrived.
