Drainage basin

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A drainage basin is a huge area of land where water gathers. All the surface water in this area flows to a single point. This point might be a river mouth or a lake. It could also be an ocean.

You might hear people call these areas watersheds. In North America, this is a very common name. These basins are important because they move water across the Earth. They help us understand how water travels through our world.

Water moves through a basin in a specific way. Most water starts as precipitation, like rain or snow. This water flows over the ground toward the outlet.

Some water seeps into the soil to become groundwater. It might move slowly through the ground to reach the river. As the water moves, it can form tributaries. These are smaller streams that join together to make bigger rivers. This creates a pattern that looks like branches on a tree.

Scientists and engineers study these areas to manage our water. They use a task called watershed delineation to find the boundaries. These boundaries are made of high ridges or hills. We call this edge a drainage divide.

Some basins are different because they are closed. These are called endorheic basins. In these areas, water flows to an inland sink instead of the ocean. This might be a permanent lake or a dry lake bed.

There are many different basins around the world. About 48.71% of the world's land drains into the Atlantic Ocean. The Arctic Ocean drains about 17% of the world's land. The Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean each drain about 13%.

Some river basins are truly massive. The Amazon basin is the largest at 7 million square kilometers. The Congo and the Nile are also very big. The Mississippi is another famous large basin in the United States.

Drainage basins connect everything in nature. As water flows, it picks up nutrients and sediment. It can also carry pollution from farms or cities.

This can change the life in the water at the end of the basin. For example, extra minerals can make plants grow too fast. This can upset the natural balance of the water. Understanding basins helps people work together to protect our water. Many countries must share the management of a single river basin.
