A drainage basin is a large area of land.

In this area, all surface water flows to one spot. This spot might be a river mouth. It could also be a lake or an ocean.

High hills and ridges mark the edges of a basin. This edge is called a drainage divide. It acts like a wall to separate one basin from another.

Some basins are made of smaller ones that join together.

Most water flows to the sea. But some basins are closed. These are called endorheic basins.

In these areas, water flows toward the middle. It might end up in a sink. A sink can be a lake or a dry lake. Some water even goes underground.

Water moves many things as it flows. It can pick up soil or nutrients. It can also pick up pollution. This water travels to the end of the basin. This can change the life in the water. For example, extra minerals can make plants grow too fast. This can upset the natural balance of the water.
