Lakandula was a very important leader in the Philippines. He was the last paramount ruler of a place called Tondo. Tondo was a busy town located near the Pasig River delta. This area was a huge center for trading goods.

Being a Lakan was a big job. The title meant he was a principal ruler or a prince. Some people think the name Lakandula meant "Lord of the Palace." Tondo was a very successful port because it was right by the sea. Merchant ships would come to the bay to sell their goods. The Lakan would buy these items and then trade them with people living up the river. This helped Tondo become a center for all kinds of trade.

History tells us about his meeting with Spanish explorers. In May 1571, a leader named Miguel López de Legazpi arrived. Lakandula met him to talk about peace. On May 18, 1571, he identified himself as "Sibunao Lacandola." He was joined by two other leaders, Rajah Ache and Rajah Sulayman. These three rulers helped make a peace pact with the Spaniards. This agreement helped the Spanish settle in the area.

Lakandula was a helpful leader during this change. He helped the Spaniards build a house and a fort. He even gave them fourteen pieces of artillery and twelve jars of gunpowder. These were very important gifts for the Spanish. Soon after, Lakandula and his sons became Catholics. He even took a new name, Don Carlos Lacandola. This was named after King Charles I of Spain.

Later, some other leaders fought against the Spanish in the Battle of Bangkusay. Lakandula chose not to join that fight. Instead, he stayed loyal to the peace he had made. Because of this, the Spanish leader Legazpi trusted him. Legazpi even let some of Lakandula's men go free after the battle. Later in 1571, Lakandula traveled with the Spanish to other places like Bulacan and Pampanga. People saw that a great leader like him followed the new rules, so they did too.
