His title was Lakan. This meant he was a paramount ruler. Tondo was a busy port by the sea. Many merchant ships came to trade goods there. Bunao helped manage this trade. He would buy goods from ships. Then he would trade them with people living further up the river.

In the 1570s, people from Spain arrived. Their leader was named Miguel López de Legazpi. Bunao met Legazpi to talk. Bunao wanted to keep things peaceful. He helped the Spaniards build a fort. He even gave them gunpowder to use.

Later, some leaders fought against the Spanish. This was called the Battle of Bangkusay. Bunao did not join the fight. He chose to support the Spanish instead. Legazpi even let some of Bunao's men go free. This showed that Legazpi trusted Bunao. Later, Bunao went on trips with Legazpi. He helped spread Spanish rule to other lands. This was because other people saw that a great leader like Bunao followed the new rules.
