Labuan has a very long and busy history. For three hundred years, it was part of the Sultanate of Brunei. In 1846, the British took control of the island. Captain Rodney Mundy signed a treaty with the Sultan of Brunei. The British wanted a place to protect their ships. They also wanted to stop pirates in the South China Sea.

In 1848, it became a Crown Colony. Later, companies tried to find coal on the island. In 1894, they even built a cable under the sea to help people talk to Singapore and Hong Kong.

During World War II, the island changed hands again. Japan occupied Labuan from 1942 until 1945.
