It is part of a state called Kedah. The islands sit in a body of water called the Strait of Malacca. This area is near the border of Thailand. Most of the islands are quite small. There are 99 islands in the whole group. Five of these islands only appear when the tide is low.

The main island is where most people live and visit. It has many green forests and high mountains.

Nature is a huge part of life on the islands. Two-thirds of the main island is covered in forest and hills. The rocks here are very old. Some parts of the land rose from the sea over 500 million years ago. This is called the Machinchang Formation. You can see these ancient rocks at Teluk Datai.

Visitors can take a cable car up Gunung Mat Chinchang. At the top, you can walk on the Langkawi Sky Bridge. The view from the bridge is very high above the trees.

Langkawi has a very long and interesting history. In the 14th century, a traveler named Wang Dayuan wrote about the islands. Later, the island was known as "Pepper Island" by people in Aceh. In the 1800s, the Siamese army invaded the area. This was a hard time for the local people. Many people had to leave their homes. Later, the islands came under British rule in 1909.

The islands eventually became part of independent Malaysia.

Today, many people travel from all over the world to visit. In 2012, more than three million tourists came to the islands. Many people go to Pantai Cenang to enjoy the beach.

Others visit the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park. This park has mangrove forests and limestone caves. You might see crocodiles, eagles, or monkeys there. You can also fly through the air while parasailing at dawn. The island is also a special UNESCO World Geopark.

Life on the islands is a mix of many different things. The main town is called Kuah. It is home to a famous landmark called Eagle Square.

This square has a large sculpture of an eagle. The name Langkawi might mean "island of the reddish-brown eagle." About 99,000 people live in the district. Most of them are Malay, but many other groups live there too. People speak Malay and English. You can reach the islands by plane or by ferry.
