Because of her bold spirit, people also called her the Queen of Montmartre. She was a very important figure in the world of dance.

Her dance was a lively style called the can-can. At the time, she performed an early form called the chahut.

She had many special moves to impress the crowd. She would swirl her raised dress to show a heart on her knickers. She also performed high kicks. Sometimes she would even flip a man's hat with her toe. These moves made her a very captivating performer.

Not much is known about her early childhood. It is believed she was born into a Jewish family from Alsace. Her family eventually moved to Clichy, near Paris. As a young girl, she loved to dance. She would often dress up in expensive clothing from her mother's laundry work. She would pretend to be a glamorous star on a big stage. By age 16, she was working in the laundry with her mother.

Louise became a permanent headliner at the Moulin Rouge.

The famous painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec made many posters of her. Her best friend was another dancer named La Môme Fromage. People thought they were like sisters.

In 1895, Louise left the Moulin Rouge to start her own show. She spent much of her money on a traveling show. Sadly, the show did not succeed. Later in life, she had many hard times. She returned to Montmartre in 1928. She sold peanuts, cigarettes, and matches on a street corner. She died in 1929 at the age of 62. She is buried in the Montmartre Cemetery in Paris.
