Rodolphe Salis was a man who changed how people enjoyed nightlife. He is remembered as the creator of the modern cabaret. A cabaret is a special kind of club or nightclub. In these places, people sit at tables to drink and eat. They also watch different acts perform on a stage. Salis was the host and the owner of a famous club called the Chat Noir, or the Black Cat.

He also acted as the master of ceremonies. This means he led the shows and talked to the audience. He was known for being very bold and sometimes sarcastic with his guests.

Running the Chat Noir involved many unique steps and ideas. Salis wanted to combine art with a place to have a drink. He even put a piano in his tavern to play music. At that time, this was a very new and innovative idea. He also used a master of ceremonies to interact with the crowd. This person would talk to the people sitting at the tables. This way of hosting made the club feel very lively.

It helped his club stand out from other places in Paris.

Salis began his journey in a very artistic way. Before the club, he belonged to a group called the École de l'Iriso-Subversive. He and his friends painted religious objects like the Stations of the Cross. They divided the work based on what each person did best. Rene Gilbert painted heads, while Wagner painted hands. Antonio de La Gandara worked on draperies. Finally, Salis painted the backgrounds and the landscapes.

This training helped him understand how to host artists.

There are many specific facts about the history of the Black Cat. The first club opened in November 1881 at 84 Boulevard Rochechouart. It was a small building with only two rooms. Because it became so popular, Salis moved to a new place. On 10 June 1885, he moved to 12 Rue Victor-Masse. A group of writers called "those who are afraid of water" met there. They preferred to drink wine and beer instead of water.

These artists helped make the club famous.

Salis was a very colorful and memorable person. He had bright red hair that looked like vermilion. He also had a copper beard and a stout body. People said his voice was a strong, biting baritone. Even though he was sometimes stingy with money, he attracted great talent. In the 1890s, he even took his shows on tour through France. This was not a common thing for clubs to do back then. His influence on the cabaret style can still be seen today.
