A cabaret is a lively form of theatrical entertainment. It brings together music, song, dance, and drama into one show.

People usually watch these performances while sitting at tables. They might be dining or drinking during the show. A master of ceremonies, or M.C., often introduces the acts. In the United States, cabarets might include drag shows or solo singers. Some venues also feature burlesque or striptease performances. This style of art creates a special bond between the performers and the audience.

How a cabaret works can vary quite a bit. In many places, an ensemble of actors performs the show. Some venues focus on specific types of entertainment. For example, the Cabaret de la fin du Monde used servers dressed as Greek and Roman gods. They presented living scenes that were part of the show. Other places, like the Boite a Fursy, focused on political satire. This means they used humor to talk about current events. Some cabarets are purely theatrical and show short plays.

The history of the cabaret begins with the word "cambrette." This meant a small room in the 12th century. The first written use of the word "kaberet" was in 1275 in Tournai. In France, cabarets appeared in Paris by the late 15th century. They were different from taverns because they served food on covered tables.

By the 17th century, they became popular meeting places for artists. Famous writers like Moliere and Jean Racine used to visit them. They even had a cabaret called the Mouton Blanc.

Many famous names and places shaped the cabaret world. Rodolphe Salis opened a famous modern cabaret in Montmartre in 1881. He was a theatrical agent who loved to mock the wealthy. In 1889, Joseph Oller opened the famous Moulin Rouge. It featured a large red windmill on its roof.

This venue became the birthplace of the French Cancan dance. Many great performers, like singer Edith Piaf, became famous there. In the 20th century, the Printania music garden could seat twelve thousand people. It even had shows with lions and elephants.

Cabaret styles changed as they moved around the world. In Germany, the style included "gallows humor," which is a dark type of joke. In the Netherlands, it is called kleinkunst, meaning "small art."

Dutch comedians often perform on television on New Year's Eve. In Poland, the cabaret often uses comedy sketches and songs. American cabaret arrived in 1911 through Jesse Louis Lasky. In the United States, the music changed with the rise of jazz. New York cabarets often focused on famous vocalists like Nina Simone.
