In 1991, a series of massive oil fires broke out in Kuwait.

These fires were not accidents. They happened because the Iraqi military set fire to many oil wells. They also burned oil-filled areas like lakes and trenches.

This happened as Iraqi forces were leaving Kuwait during the Gulf War. The fires created huge clouds of smoke in the sky. These smoke plumes could even be seen from space.

There were several reasons why these fires were started. Some people believe the smoke was used as a screen. The thick smoke could hide military movements from satellites and planes.

It might also have been used to stop ground troops from moving forward. Other reasons involve the dispute between Iraq and Kuwait. There were disagreements over how much oil Kuwait was producing. This led to the invasion of Kuwait in 1990. The destruction of the wells was a way to cause harm.

The fires were very large and lasted a long time. Estimates say there were between 605 and 732 oil well fires.

These fires burned about four to six million barrels of oil every day. In total, about one billion barrels of oil were burned.

This was nearly one percent of all the oil in Kuwait. The smoke also made the air very hard to breathe. This caused health problems for many soldiers on the ground.

Putting out the fires was a very hard job.

Workers had to deal with dangerous land mines first. They used many different ways to fight the flames. Most fires were put out using seawater from the ocean.

They even sent the seawater through old oil pipelines. Some workers used huge engines to blast water at the wells. Others used explosives to blow out the flames like a candle. One company called Safety Boss capped 180 of the wells.

It took many months of work to fix the damage. The first fires were put out in early April 1991.

The very last well was finally capped on November 6, 1991. The total cost to fix the wells was about $1.5 billion.

These events changed how people think about protecting oil fields. They also showed how much damage war can do to nature. The smoke and oil caused pollution for a long time. This is a big part of the history of the Gulf War.
