These fires were not accidental. They were caused by the Iraqi military as they retreated from Kuwait. The military set fire to hundreds of oil wells and other oil-filled areas. These areas included oil lakes and long fire trenches. The fires created enormous smoke plumes in the atmosphere. These plumes were so large that they could be seen from space.

Several military and political factors led to this destruction. One major reason involved a dispute between Iraq and Kuwait. They disagreed over oil production levels and drilling in the Rumaila oil field. Iraq also had military goals for the fires. The thick smoke acted as a smoke screen. This screen could hide military movements from satellites and precision-guided weapons. The smoke might also have served as an area denial obstacle. This means the heat and debris could slow down advancing ground forces.

To achieve these goals, the Iraqi military used systematic sabotage. As early as December 1990, they placed explosive charges on wells. The systematic burning began on January 16, 1991. Satellite images detected the first smoke on February 8. The number of fires peaked between February 22 and February 24. This coincided with the start of the allied ground offensive. Beyond the wells, they also used fire trenches. These were long, wide, and deep ditches filled with oil. They were built to stop infantry and mechanized units.

The scale of the destruction was immense. Estimates suggest between 605 and 732 oil wells were on fire.

The Kuwait Petroleum Company reported 749 total facilities were damaged or burning. These fires represented about 50% of all oil well fires in petroleum history. They also damaged roughly 85% of the wells in every major Kuwaiti oil field. During the peak, the fires burned four to six million barrels of crude oil daily. They also released seventy to one hundred million cubic meters of natural gas every day. In total, about one billion barrels of oil were burned.

The environmental and human effects were very serious. The smoke caused a dramatic decrease in air quality. This led to respiratory problems for many soldiers. The smoke also fell back to earth through rain or dry deposition. Some fires produced pure black soot, while others produced white or grey plumes.

One major accident occurred on March 21, 1991. A Royal Saudi Air Force C-130H plane crashed in the heavy smoke. This accident killed 92 Senegalese soldiers and 6 Saudi crew members. This was the largest accident among the Coalition forces. The fires were also linked to Gulf War syndrome, a chronic disorder affecting veterans.

Extinguishing the fires required massive, dangerous efforts. Crews could not work immediately because of land mines. They had to perform military demining first. Many companies worked to stop the fires, including Safety Boss. Safety Boss capped 180 of the 600 wells. To fight the flames, workers used seawater. They repaired old oil pipelines to pump seawater from the Persian Gulf. They sprayed this water at the base of the fires. Some used a "Big wind" method with gas turbine engines. This blasted water at high velocity to hit the fires.

Other methods were used for the most difficult wells. For vertical fires, workers used high explosives like dynamite. They created a blast wave to push away the fuel and oxygen. This worked similarly to how one blows out a candle. The goal was to stop the fuel from igniting. The effort to control the fires began in April 1991. The last well was finally capped on November 6, 1991. The total cost to the Kuwaiti government was approximately $1.5 billion. This event remains a significant example of environmental damage caused by conflict.
