Some people think they did this to hide their movements with smoke. Others think they wanted to cause harm to the country.

There were between 605 and 732 oil well fires.

The smoke rose very high into the sky. This made the air hard to breathe for many people. The fires burned a lot of oil every day. It is estimated that one billion barrels of oil burned.

Workers had to work hard to stop the flames. They used seawater from the ocean. They sent the water through old oil pipes. Some workers used big engines to blast water at the fires. They even used explosives to put out some flames. They worked like someone blowing out a candle. The last well was capped on November 6, 1991. It took many months of hard work to fix the damage.
