An oil war is a fight over oil. Oil is a resource used for fuel. People may fight to get it. They may also fight to control how it moves.

There are many ways oil can lead to war. Some leaders may want to take new land with oil. This can make one group too powerful. Other fights happen to protect paths for oil to travel.

Sometimes, wealth from oil can change how a country is run. This wealth might help groups start small wars.

Not all people agree that oil causes these fights. A scholar named Emily Meierding studied this. She looked at four big wars. She found that oil was not the main reason for the fighting. A new study in 2024 found something else. It said oil can sometimes stop states from fighting over land. But a 2026 study found that new fuel can increase the chance of war. This happens when many states can claim the same resource.
