He was the son of King Chandragupta II and Queen Dhruvadevi. He took many grand titles during his time as leader. One of his titles was Maharajadhiraja. He also used the name Mahendraditya on his many coins.

Keeping such a huge empire stable was a big job. Kumaragupta used a system of many leaders to help him. He ruled through governors called Uparikas. These governors managed different provinces called Bhuktis.

Each province was split into smaller districts called vishayas. District magistrates called Vishyapatis ran these areas. They had an advisory council to help them make choices. This council included leaders from merchant guilds and artisan guilds. It even included a town mayor and a chief scribe. This organized way of ruling helped the empire stay strong.

Historians study his life through old writings and coins. These items are called inscriptions and numismatic evidence.
