Kotelny Island is a huge landmass in the Russian Arctic. It is part of the New Siberian Islands. This island sits between the Laptev Sea and the East Siberian Sea. It is one of the 50 largest islands in the world. The total area of the island is 23,165 square kilometers.

It is part of the Bulunsky District in the Republic of Sakha. Many people find this place interesting because of its unique shape and size.

The island is made of different types of land. The western part is called Kotelny proper. This area is rocky and has hills. The highest point is Mt. Malakatyn-Tas, which is 374 meters tall.

Between Kotelny and Faddeyevsky Island lies Bunge Land. This is a flat, sandy, and empty zone. It is only 8 meters high at its highest point. Because it is so low, storm surges often flood most of it.

People discovered this island a long time ago. In 1770, a man named Ivan Lyakhov saw reindeer tracks on the sea ice. In 1773, he and a merchant named Protod’yakonov found the island by boat. They named it "Kettle Island" after a copper kettle they found there.

They did not know who had left the kettle behind. Later, explorers like Yakov Sannikov visited the area. He even reported seeing a mysterious "new land" north of the island in 1811.

The island has a very harsh Arctic climate. It stays very cold for most of the year. Temperatures only rise above freezing for a short time in summer.

Because of the cold, the ground has thick permafrost. This is frozen soil that can be 400 to 500 meters thick. Small plants like moss, lichen, and short grasses grow here. These plants stay very low to the ground to survive the wind.

Kotelny Island has been used for many different things. From 1933 to 1993, the Soviet Union kept a naval base there.

Today, there is a civilian research station for science. In 2014, a military air base called Northern Shamrock was established. It has an airfield that can receive large planes all year. The island even appears in books. A famous story by Jules Verne takes place on this island.
