Kotelny Island is a very large island in the Russian Arctic. It sits in the New Siberian Islands. The island is between the Laptev Sea and the East Siberian Sea. It is one of the 50 largest islands on Earth.

The land has different shapes. The western part is rocky and has hills. The highest point is Mt. Malakatyn-Tas. It is 374 meters tall. Other parts of the island are flat and sandy. This area is called Bunge Land. Most of Bunge Land is very low. It often floods during big storms.

The weather is harsh and cold. It is an Arctic climate. Temperatures stay below freezing for most of the year. It only gets a little warm in the short summer.

Small plants grow in the cold soil. You can find moss, lichen, and short grasses. These plants stay very low to the ground.

People have visited the island for a long time. In 1773, a Russian hunter and a merchant found it. They named it after a copper kettle they found there. Later, the Soviet Union built a naval base there. Today, people use the island for science and military work.
