The history of the Komi people goes back a long time. Traders from the Novgorod Republic first met them in the 11th century. These traders were looking for furs and animal hides. Later, the Moscow principality grew more powerful in the area. In the 1400s and 1500s, many monks arrived too. A missionary named Stephen of Perm even made an alphabet for the Komi.

This helped the people record their own language. The capital city, Syktyvkar, began to grow in the 1500s.

In the 1900s, the region changed a lot. The Komi-Zyryan Autonomous Oblast was formed in 1921. Later, in 1936, it became the Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Many people came to the area during this time. Some were prisoners sent to work in the Arctic.
