It is located in the northeast of European Russia. The land sits within the vast East European Plain. To the northeast, the Polar Ural Mountains rise above the landscape. This republic is the second-largest region in European Russia. Only the Arkhangelsk Oblast covers more area in this part of the country. The region is known for its massive forests and rich natural resources.

The geography of the republic is defined by its wild nature. Forests cover more than 70% of the entire territory. Swamps cover approximately 15% of the land.

Many large rivers flow through these forests and plains. These include the Pechora, Izhma, Usa, and Vychegda rivers. The highest point in the republic is Mount Narodnaya. It reaches an elevation of 1,894 meters. The climate features long, cold winters and short, warm summers.

Natural resources are very important to the region's economy. The land contains large reservoirs of coal and oil. It also holds natural gas, gold, and diamonds. Timber is another major resource found in the vast woods.

These resources have shaped how people live and work there. The environment also supports many animals, including abundant native reindeer. Local indigenous populations have bred these reindeer for human use.

The history of the Komi people dates back many centuries. In the 11th century, traders from the Novgorod Republic arrived. They traveled to the Perm region to find furs and animal hides. They called these lands Zavolochye, which means "beyond the portage."

Later, the Moscow principality expanded its influence into these territories. During the 14th and 15th centuries, monastic activity increased significantly. A missionary named Stephen of Perm created the first alphabet for the Komi people. This helped preserve their culture and language.

The 20th century brought massive changes to the republic. On August 22, 1921, the Komi-Zyryan Autonomous Oblast was established. By December 5, 1936, it became the Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.

During the Soviet era, many prisoners were sent to the Arctic. These prisoners were part of the Gulag system. They performed forced labor in the tundra and taiga. These workers built the republic's major cities, such as Vorkuta, Pechora, and Inta. They also constructed the original roads, railways, and industrial infrastructure.

Today, the republic is a place of diverse populations. As of the 2021 census, the population was 737,853 people. This was a decrease from the 901,189 people recorded in 2010.

One of the most famous landmarks is Manpupuner. This site is located in the northern Ural Mountains. It features seven massive rock towers known as the "7 Strong Men."

These towers are considered one of the Seven Wonders of Russia. Their abnormal shapes and great height make them very difficult to climb. Even experienced rock climbers find the tops of these giants inaccessible. The Virgin Komi Forests are also a major site. This area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the largest expanse of virgin forests in Europe.
