They started in the year 1118. Their main goal was to protect travelers. These travelers were going to the city of Jerusalem.

The group had a home on the Temple Mount.

At first, the group was very small. They only had nine knights. They were very poor. Their symbol showed two knights riding one horse. This showed they lived simply.

Soon, the group grew very big. They became very powerful and rich.

Most members were not fighters. In fact, 90% of them had other jobs. They helped manage money for many people. They created an early way to bank. A traveler could leave money in one place. Then, they could use a paper to get it in another place. This kept them safe from robbers.

Later, the group lost its power. King Philip IV of France arrested many members. In 1312, the Pope ended the group. Some of their lands went to other groups in Spain and Portugal.
