They were also known as the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon. Their main job was to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem.

These travelers often faced dangers from bandits on the roads. To help, the order was founded in 1118. They set up their headquarters on the Temple Mount. This place was special because it sat above the ruins of the Temple of Solomon.

The group started very small with only nine knights.

These early members were very poor. Their emblem showed two knights riding a single horse to show this. However, the order grew very fast after they received official support. A leader named Saint Bernard of Clairvaux helped them gain favor with the Church. In 1129, the Council of Troyes officially approved the order. By 1139, Pope Innocent II gave them special rules. These rules meant they did not have to pay taxes. They could also travel freely across many different borders.

While many people think of them as fighters, most members were not soldiers. In fact, about 90% of the members held support roles. They built a huge network of nearly 1,000 strongholds across Europe and the Holy Land.

They managed many farms, vineyards, and even large fleets of ships. They were so organized that some call them a very early multinational corporation. They even owned the entire island of Cyprus at one time. This massive system helped them hold a lot of land and power.

The Templars also helped invent an early way to use banks.

Around the year 1150, they began using letters of credit. A pilgrim could leave money at a Templar building in one place. They would receive a document to show their deposit. Then, they could show that paper to get their money in the Holy Land. This kept their treasure safe from robbers during the long trip. This clever system was a very early form of banking. It helped the order grow even wealthier over time.

Eventually, the order began to lose its influence. They could no longer hold onto all their lands in the Holy Land. In 1307, King Philip IV of France arrested many members. He used harsh methods to get false confessions from them.

Under pressure from the King, Pope Clement V disbanded the order in 1312. Some of their assets went to the Order of Christ in Portugal.
