He has served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom since 2024. Before becoming Prime Minister, he led the Labour Party starting in 2020. He also served as the Leader of the Opposition from 2020 to 2024. His career involves managing the legal system and directing the national government. His leadership roles have shaped how the United Kingdom interacts with the world.

Starmer's professional journey began with a deep focus on the law.

He earned a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Leeds in 1985. Later, he earned a Bachelor of Civil Law from St Edmund Hall, Oxford, in 1986. After becoming a barrister, he specialized in criminal defense and human rights. He eventually became a Queen's Counsel in 2002. This title is a high honor for lawyers in the United Kingdom.

In 2008, Starmer took on a major role in the British legal system.

He was appointed Director of Public Prosecutions and head of the Crown Prosecution Service. In this role, he managed how the state prosecutes crimes. He handled significant cases, such as the Stephen Lawrence murder case. He also oversaw prosecutions during the 2011 England riots. These experiences helped him understand how to change systems from within.

Starmer entered formal politics after his legal career was well established. He was elected as the Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras in 2015.

He previously served as the Shadow Brexit Secretary under Jeremy Corbyn. After Corbyn resigned following the 2019 general election, Starmer won the 2020 leadership election. As leader, he moved the Labour Party toward the political center. He also focused on addressing antisemitism within the party.

The 2024 general election marked a major turning point for Starmer and his party.

The Labour Party achieved a landslide victory. This result ended 14 years of Conservative government rule. However, the victory was unique in British history. It was the smallest vote share for any majority government since 1830. This means he leads with a significant number of seats but a smaller portion of the total vote.

As Prime Minister, Starmer has implemented several significant domestic policies.

His government ended certain Winter Fuel Payments for some citizens. He also introduced an early-release scheme for prisoners to reduce overcrowding. To manage migration, his government launched the Border Security Command. He also released a migration white paper to restrict visa conditions. Additionally, his administration has increased the minimum wage and invested in new nuclear power.

Starmer also manages the United Kingdom's relationships with other nations.

He has maintained support for Ukraine during the Russo-Ukrainian war. In the Gaza war, he supported Israel while calling for a ceasefire. His government formally recognized the State of Palestine. He also negotiated trade agreements with India, the United States, and the European Union. Furthermore, he oversaw the transfer of sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius.

Despite his political successes, Starmer has faced challenges with public opinion.

His net approval rating has fluctuated during his time in office. By November 2025, an Ipsos poll suggested he was quite unpopular. The poll indicated he was the least popular prime minister since 1977. This highlights the complex relationship between leaders and the people they serve. His premiership continues to impact British law, economy, and foreign policy.
