Blair's early life involved several different locations. He was born on 6 May 1953, in Edinburgh, Scotland. His family lived in Australia for a short time when he was a child. They eventually returned to the United Kingdom and settled in Durham. His father worked as a law lecturer at Durham University. Blair attended Fettes College, an independent boarding school in Edinburgh. Later, he studied jurisprudence, which is the study of law, at St John's College, Oxford. While at Oxford, he was active in music and comedy. He played guitar in a rock band called Ugly Rumours.

His path into politics began after he graduated from Oxford in 1975. Blair joined the Labour Party shortly after his studies. He first attempted to run for a seat in Beaconsfield in 1982. Although he lost that election, he gained recognition within his party. In 1983, he was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sedgefield. He represented this constituency for twenty-four years, until 2007. In 1994, following the death of John Smith, Blair won the leadership of the Labour Party. He rebranded the party as "New Labour" to move it toward the political centre.

Blair's first term as Prime Minister was marked by major domestic reforms. He led the Labour Party to a landslide victory in 1997, winning 418 seats. This ended 18 years of opposition for his party. During his time in office, he increased public spending on healthcare and education. He also introduced a national minimum wage for workers. Other significant actions included introducing tuition fees for higher education and enabling devolution in Scotland and Wales. He also worked to expand LGBTQ rights. One of his most important achievements was progress in the Northern Ireland peace process through the Good Friday Agreement.

His leadership also involved significant international military interventions. In 1999, he oversaw British involvement in Kosovo. In 2000, he managed interventions in Sierra Leone. After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, his second term was defined by the "war on terror." Blair supported the United States and the George W. Bush administration. This led to British participation in the war in Afghanistan to target the Taliban and al-Qaeda. Most controversially, Blair supported the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He acted on the belief that Saddam Hussein's regime possessed weapons of mass destruction.

The Iraq War created deep divisions within the United Kingdom. The invasion was met with widespread opposition. In fact, 139 of Blair's own Members of Parliament opposed the decision. As casualties from the war increased, Blair faced accusations of misleading Parliament. This caused his popularity to drop significantly. Although he won a third term in 2005, his majority was reduced. He faced other political difficulties, including the Cash-for-Honours scandal. By 2006, he announced his intention to resign. He officially left office in June 2007, and was succeeded by his former chancellor, Gordon Brown.

Since leaving government, Blair has remained active in global affairs. He served as a special envoy for the Quartet on the Middle East until 2015. In 2016, he founded the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. He currently serves as its Executive Chairman. In 2009, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from George W. Bush.

Historians and the public view his legacy in complex ways. He achieved some of the highest approval ratings in British history. However, he also experienced some of the lowest ratings following the Iraq War. The 2016 Iraq Inquiry provided a critical assessment of his role in that conflict.
