\n\nIn 2010, Cameron became Prime Minister. He led a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats.

This was the first coalition in the UK since 1945. His government had to manage the effects of the 2008 financial crisis. To address the Great Recession, his administration used austerity measures. Austerity involves reducing government spending to manage national debt. His government also passed the Welfare Reform Act and the Health and Social Care Act. These laws brought large changes to British healthcare and social support systems.\n\nCameron's administration oversaw several major social and international events. He helped oversee the 2012 London Olympics. His government also passed the Equality Act and legalized same-sex marriage in England and Wales.

This allowed Cameron to lead a majority government instead of a coalition. He also oversaw the 2011 Scottish independence referendum. The results of that vote confirmed the outcome he favored.\n\nOne of the most significant moments was the Brexit referendum in 2016.

This was a vote on whether the UK should stay in the European Union. Cameron supported the "Britain Stronger in Europe" campaign. However, the "Vote Leave" campaign won the referendum. Because of this result, Cameron resigned as Prime Minister. He was succeeded by his Home Secretary, Theresa May. His decision to hold the referendum is often cited as a cause of political instability in the late 2010s. Academics have ranked his performance in the third and fourth quintiles of prime ministers.\n\nAfter leaving Downing Street, Cameron stayed active in different ways. He served as the president of Alzheimer's Research UK from 2017 to 2023. He was later appointed to the House of Lords as Baron Cameron of Chipping Norton. This allowed him to return to high office as Foreign Secretary in 2023.
