Katharine Cook Briggs was an American writer who wanted to understand people. She is most famous for helping create a personality test. This test is called the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI for short.

She worked on this with her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers. Together, they helped people learn about their own characters. This work matters because many people still use the test today. It is used for things like job training and marriage counseling.

Briggs began her work by studying how children grow and learn. She wanted to find ways to help children be happy. She also wanted to help them find the right jobs. In 1917, she identified four main personality types. These were called meditative, spontaneous, executive, and sociable types. Later, she read the work of a man named Carl Jung. Jung had ideas about how people take in information. Briggs used these ideas to build her own theories. She and Isabel spent twenty years watching how people behave.

Katharine was born on January 3, 1875, in Ingham County, Michigan. Her father, Albert John Cook, taught at a college. She was homeschooled for a long time. She did not go to a formal school until she was fourteen. After college, she earned a degree in agriculture. She also worked as a teacher for a while. Later, she married a physicist named Lyman James Briggs. They had one daughter named Isabel, who was born in 1897.

Briggs and her daughter did many important tests. In 1945, they tested students at George Washington Medical School. During World War II, Isabel made a test for war jobs. Isabel eventually turned their ideas into a paper and pencil test. This test puts people into 16 different personality combinations. Since 1962, the test has been part of a large collection. It is estimated that 50 million people have taken it.

Learning about personality can feel like looking in a mirror. The MBTI helps people see how they make choices. Some people call the test pseudoscience. They think it was made at home without enough scientific research. However, the framework of the test has stayed the same since it began. It helps people understand why they act the way they do. This connects to how we all try to understand our friends and family.
