Isabel Briggs Myers was an American writer. She is best known for helping create a famous personality test. This test is called the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI. It is used all over the world today. Over two million people take the questionnaire every year.

Myers wanted to help people understand themselves and others. She thought it was important to match people to the right jobs. Her work helps people look at how they think and act.

To make the test, Myers used ideas from a man named Carl Jung. Jung had three pairs of traits. These were Extraversion and Introversion, Sensation and Intuition, and Thinking and Feeling. Myers and her mother added a fourth pair called Judging and Perceiving. They worked together for twenty years to finish their research.

This long process turned their ideas into a paper survey. The survey sorts people into sixteen different personality types.

Isabel grew up in Washington, D.C. Her mother, Katharine Cook Briggs, taught her at home. Her father, Lyman James Briggs, was a research physicist. Isabel later went to Swarthmore College to study political science. While there, she met Clarence Myers. They married in 1918 and stayed together until he died in 1980.

Before her work on the test, she was a mystery novelist. She even won a contest in 1928 for her book "Murder Yet to Come."

During World War II, Myers saw a new need for her test. She read an article about fitting workers to their jobs. In 1945, she and her mother tested the MBTI on 5,500 students. They did this at the George Washington School of Medicine. They looked at patterns to see why some students were successful.

Later, in 1975, she helped start a group called CAPT. This group is a non-profit based in Gainesville, Florida. It helps keep the research for the MBTI going today.

Many people use the MBTI in their daily lives. Businesses, coaches, and psychologists often use it to help people. Myers even wrote a book called "Gifts Differing" with her son, Peter. It explains how personality affects marriage and careers.

Even though many people use it, some researchers have questions about it. They study if the test is always accurate. Still, the work of Isabel Briggs Myers remains very famous around the world.
