He was a psychiatrist, which is a medical doctor who treats mental health. Many people call him the father of cognitive therapy. This is a special way of helping people feel better by looking at their thoughts. His work helped many people dealing with sadness and worry. He was even named one of the most influential psychotherapists of all time.

Beck discovered a new way to help people by watching how they think. He noticed that people feeling very sad often had "automatic thoughts." These are quick, negative ideas that pop into a person's head without any warning. He found these thoughts usually fell into three groups called the cognitive triad. These groups are negative ideas about oneself, the world, and the future. Beck helped his patients identify these thoughts and check if they were actually true. By thinking more realistically, patients could feel better and act in better ways.

Beck's ideas are part of things you might already know about. You might have heard of therapy or doctors helping people with their feelings. His work is like a bridge between different ways of studying the brain. He used ideas from old philosophers to help build his new methods. He even practiced what he taught by writing down his own thoughts. This helped him understand how to help others find a clearer way to think.
