He was a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist is a doctor who helps people with their minds. He was born in 1921 in Rhode Island. He went to Yale Medical School. Later, he worked at the University of Pennsylvania.

Beck changed how we treat sadness and worry. He is known as the father of cognitive therapy. This is a way to help people by looking at their thoughts. He noticed that sad people often have automatic thoughts. These are quick, negative ideas that pop into the mind. These thoughts often focus on the self, the world, and the future. Beck called this the cognitive triad.

He taught patients to find these thoughts. He helped them see if the thoughts were real. This helped them feel better and act in better ways. Beck also made the Beck Depression Inventory. This is a tool used to measure how sad a person feels. In 1994, he started the Beck Institute. He did this with his daughter, Judith. The institute helps train people in these new ways of thinking.
