Hans Eysenck was a very famous psychologist.

He spent his life studying how people think and act. He is best known for his work on intelligence and personality. At one time, he was the most cited psychologist in the world. This means other scientists used his work more than anyone else. He wrote about 80 books and over 1,600 journal articles. He also helped create ways to treat mental illnesses. His work changed how people understand the human mind.

Eysenck created a way to describe personality using three main parts. These are called dimensions. The first is extraversion, which looks at how social a person is. The second is neuroticism, which measures how much stress a person feels. He added a third part called psychoticism later in his life.

He thought these traits were linked to our biology. He wanted to show that our personalities are partly shaped by our genes. This means we inherit some traits from our parents.

Eysenck's life began in Berlin, Germany. His father was an actor and his mother was a film star. He was raised by his grandmother. Later, he moved to England in the 1930s. He moved because he strongly opposed the Nazi party. This was a very difficult time in history. Because he was a German citizen, he had a hard time finding work at first. He eventually earned his PhD from University College London in 1940.

Some of Eysenck's ideas caused a lot of trouble in the science world. These ideas are called controversial. He claimed that certain personality types had a higher risk of heart disease. He also made claims about IQ scores and race.

Many other scientists disagreed with him. They found errors in his data or could not repeat his results. In 2020, many of his papers were retracted. A retraction means a scientific journal says the work should not be trusted.

Eysenck worked closely with his wife, Sybil Eysenck. They were both psychologists and worked together for many years.

They worked at the Institute of Psychiatry in London. Eysenck's work is similar to how we study personality today. We still use ideas about being social or feeling stress to understand people. Even though some of his work was corrected, he remains a major figure in history. His life shows how science is always changing as we learn more.
