Extraversion and introversion

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Have you ever wondered why some people love big, loud parties? Other people might prefer a quiet room with a good book. These differences are often explained by two personality traits called extraversion and introversion.

Extraversion is linked to being social, talkative, and having high energy. Introversion is linked to being reflective and preferring solitary activities. Most experts believe these are not just two separate boxes. Instead, they are part of a single scale or continuum. Most people have parts of both traits, but one is usually stronger.

These traits work in different ways regarding how people get energy. Extraverts often get gratification from the world around them. They thrive in groups and feel energized by human interaction. Being alone can sometimes lead to boredom for them.

Introverts find gratification in their own mental life. They often prefer to observe a situation before they join in. Too much social stimulation can feel overwhelming for them. They might find more reward in reading, writing, or meditating. It is important to know that introversion is not the same as shyness. Shyness comes from feeling distress, but introversion is simply a preference.

We can look back at history to see how these ideas grew. A Swiss psychiatrist named Carl Jung introduced these terms to psychology. He gave a lecture about them at Clark University in September 1909. The first time these ideas appeared in print was in 1910. In 1921, Jung published a book called Psychological Types. This book described the introverted type in great detail. Later, a British psychologist named Hans Eysenck added new ideas. In the 1950s, he suggested these traits might relate to brain activity. He thought extraverts seek stimulation because their brains are under-aroused.

Scientists use many different ways to measure these personality traits today. One common way is through self-report measures. This means people answer questions about how they act. Some tests use lexical measures, which are single words like "outgoing" or "quiet." For example, Goldberg developed a 20-word measure in 1992. Others use statement measures, which use longer sentences. A person might be asked if they "talk to a lot of different people at parties." Researchers must be careful when using these tests in different countries. Some questions might be hard for people to answer if they live in different cultures.

Understanding these traits helps us see how everyone fits into the world. Many famous and successful people have been introverts. This list includes Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Mahatma Gandhi. Other famous names are Dr. Seuss, Steven Spielberg, and J. K. Rowling. Author Susan Cain says that both types of people enrich our society.

Some people fall right in the middle of the scale. This middle ground is called ambiversion. The idea of ambiversion was first proposed by Edmund Smith Conklin in 1923. It became more popular after research by Adam Grant in 2013. Whether you are an extravert, an introvert, or an ambivert, you have a unique way of seeing the world.
