Many others live in neighboring states like Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. It is also spoken in places far away like the United States and Australia. Kannada is a very important part of Indian culture. The Indian government even calls it a classical language. This shows how much people value its deep history and beauty.

Writing Kannada uses a special system called the Kannada script.

This script grew from an older writing style from the 5th century. The language has changed through three main stages over time. First, there was Old Kannada, also called Haḷegannaḍa, from 450 to 1200 AD. Next came Middle Kannada, or Naḍugannaḍa, from 1200 to 1700. Finally, we have Modern Kannada, called Hosagannaḍa, which is used today. This long journey shows how the language stays alive and grows.

For hundreds of years, many great kings used Kannada.

It was the official language for many powerful dynasties. These included the Kadamba and Western Ganga dynasties. Other groups like the Chalukyas and the Vijayanagara Empire also used it. Many of these kings used Kannada in their royal courts. This helped the language spread across the Deccan Plateau. Because of these empires, Kannada became a strong language for ruling lands.

We can learn about the past through old stone carvings.

There are even older traces found in places like Brahmagiri. Some scholars think Kannada words were even spoken as far back as the 3rd century BC. These old stones act like a time machine for us. They tell us how people spoke and lived long ago.

Kannada writers are famous for their amazing skill.

They have won many prestigious honors for their stories and poems. Kannada has received eight Jnanpith Awards. This is the most for any Dravidian language. It also won an International Booker Prize.

To keep this history alive, a special study center was opened in Mysore in 2011. This helps people research and protect this wonderful language for the future.
