He was born in 1848 in the city of Kashan. His family had a long history of making art. His father, Mirza Bozorg Ghaffari Kashani, started a famous school for painting. His uncle, Abu'l-Hasan Sani al-Mulk, was a great painter of people. Even his brother, Abu Torab Ghaffari, was a well-known artist. As a young boy, Mohammad loved to draw. He was so eager to practice that he made charcoal sketches on his bedroom walls.

As he grew up, he moved to Tehran to study more. He went to a modern school called Dar-ul-Funun. There, he studied painting for three years with a teacher named Mozayyen-od-Doleh. This teacher had traveled to Europe to study Western art. During his school days, people began to notice his great talent. King Naser al-Din Shah Qajar saw his work and invited him to the royal court. The king gave him a special title. His new name was Kamal-ol-molk, which means "Perfection on Land."

While working at the royal court, Kamal-ol-molk was very busy. He created more than 170 paintings during this time. He painted landscapes, royal camps, and portraits of important people. He worked hard to improve his oil painting skills. He even taught himself how to use perspective. Perspective is a way to make a flat painting look deep and real. He used very bright colors and a tiny, delicate brush. Many of these early paintings were later lost or taken to other countries.

In 1898, when he was 47 years old, he traveled to Europe. He wanted to talk to other artists about their styles. He spent four years visiting many museums. He studied the work of famous artists like Raphael and Titian. He even practiced by copying paintings by Rembrandt. After his travels, he returned to Iran in 1902. He became a painter for five different shahs. Later, he moved to Iraq for a short time. His visits to holy cities there inspired new paintings like "Karbala-ye-Moalla Square."

When he returned to Iran again, he started a special art school. It is known as the Kamal-ol-molk Art School. He wanted to find new talent and teach them well. He did not just teach painting. He also taught carpet weaving, woodwork, and mosaic designing. He wanted to bring these older arts back to life. Kamal-ol-molk was also a very kind teacher to his students. He taught them about love and how to be good people. He even used his own money to help students who were poor.
