Joseph is a central figure in the Book of Genesis within the Hebrew Bible.

He was the firstborn son of Rachel and the eleventh son of the patriarch Jacob. Joseph is also recognized as the founder of the Tribe of Joseph among the Israelites. His life story serves as a historical explanation for how the Israelites came to live in Egypt.

The name Joseph itself has interesting linguistic roots. One explanation compares it to the Hebrew root meaning "to gather" or "to remove." Another root suggests the name means "to add." These meanings reflect the different ways his mother, Rachel, viewed his birth.

Joseph's early life in Canaan was marked by family tension. He was the favorite son of Jacob, who gave him a "long coat of many colors."

This favoritism caused deep envy among his ten half-brothers and one full brother. When Joseph was seventeen, he shared two prophetic dreams. In one dream, his brothers' bundles of grain bowed to his. In the second, the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed to him. These dreams implied his future supremacy. This angered his brothers so much that they plotted his death in Dothan.

One brother, Reuben, tried to save him by suggesting they throw him into a cistern. Eventually, the brothers sold Joseph to a passing camel caravan bound for Egypt.

In Egypt, Joseph's life changed through a series of difficult stages. He was first sold to Potiphar, the captain of Pharaoh's guard. Joseph rose to become the superintendent of Potiphar's entire household. However, Potiphar's wife made a false accusation of rape against him after he refused her advances. This led to Joseph's incarceration in prison.

While imprisoned, Joseph demonstrated a unique ability to interpret dreams. He correctly predicted that Pharaoh's chief cup-bearer would be restored to his job. He also correctly predicted that the chief baker would be executed. Although the cup-bearer forgot Joseph for two years, Joseph's gift was eventually called upon by Pharaoh himself.

Pharaoh experienced two troubling dreams involving seven fat cows and seven lean cows.

Joseph interpreted these as a warning of seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine. He advised Pharaoh to store surplus grain during the good years. Because of this wise counsel, Joseph was promoted to Vizier, the second-in-command of Egypt. He took the Egyptian name Zaphnath-Paaneah and married Asenath. During the years of plenty, Joseph managed the nation's resources. He even established a mandate where one-fifth of the produce went to the Pharaoh.

When the severe famine arrived, Joseph's brothers traveled from Canaan to Egypt to buy food. They did not recognize Joseph, who was now in his late 30s. Joseph tested his brothers to see if they had changed. He accused them of being spies and demanded they bring their youngest brother, Benjamin, to Egypt.

He even planted a silver cup in Benjamin's sack to create a crisis. When Judah offered to become a slave in Benjamin's place, Joseph realized his brothers were being honest. He finally revealed his identity to them, which caused great emotion.

The famine eventually forced Jacob's entire family to move to Egypt. Joseph arranged for them to settle in the Land of Goshen, located in the eastern Nile Delta. This migration explains the Israelite presence in Egypt. Joseph's leadership ensured the family survived the hunger.

His story has become a foundational narrative for understanding the movement of people and the origins of a nation. It highlights themes of survival, leadership, and the complexity of family relationships.

Beyond the biblical text, scholars debate the origins of the Joseph narrative. Some believe the story was a multigenerational work with different layers of writing. Others suggest it was a "diaspora novella" written by Judeans living in Egypt during the Persian period. This theory suggests the story helped people justify living outside their homeland. The story also holds deep meaning in many other traditions. In Islam, Joseph is known as the prophet Yusuf. In Jewish tradition, he is linked to the future figure Mashiach ben Yosef. Christian traditions often view him as a symbol of virtue.

The Bahá’í faith also uses his life as a metaphor for spiritual recognition. Today, his story continues to inspire many works of music, theater, and film.
