Joseph had many brothers, but they felt very envious of his special status. When Joseph was seventeen, he shared dreams that made his brothers angry. In these dreams, his family bowed down to him. This caused his brothers to plot against him in a place called Dothan.

In Egypt, Joseph worked in the house of a man named Potiphar. After a difficult time involving a false accusation, Joseph was sent to prison. While there, he showed a talent for interpreting dreams. He correctly explained the dreams of Pharaoh's cup-bearer and baker.

Even though the cup-bearer forgot him for two years, Joseph's skill was eventually needed again. Pharaoh had a dream about seven fat cows being eaten by seven thin cows. Joseph explained that this meant seven years of plenty would be followed by seven years of famine.

Because of his wise advice, Joseph rose to a very high position.

He became the Vizier of Egypt, which is a top leader. He took the name Zaphnath-Paaneah and married a woman named Asenath. Together, they had two sons named Manasseh and Ephraim. Joseph worked hard to store extra grain during the good years. This careful planning saved the people of Egypt when the famine arrived.
