It flows roughly from north to south through several different lands. The river passes through Jordan, Syria, Israel, and Palestine. It sits near the Golan Heights and the West Bank. To the east, the river marks the border for Jordan. To the west, it flows past Israel and the West Bank. This river is very important to many different groups of people.

Water flows into the river from several different sources in the north. The Dan and Hasbani rivers meet near a place called Sde Nehemia. These two streams join to become the Jordan River. Other streams like the Iyyon and the Banias also help feed it. In its upper part, the river drops quickly through the Hula Valley. It flows into the Sea of Galilee at the northern end.

From there, it travels south through the lower Jordan Valley. The river meanders through this valley before it reaches its end.

This river has a very long and deep history. Many people find it to be a holy place. In the Bible, the Israelites crossed this river to reach a Promised Land. It is also where John the Baptist baptized Jesus of Nazareth.

Some believe that Muhammad and his companions were buried near its banks. In the 1800s, explorers like William Francis Lynch traveled the river by boat. Even older records, like an Egyptian papyrus, mention its name.

There are many interesting facts about the river's size and life. The river once had a flow of 1.3 billion cubic metres every year. Now, much less water flows into the Dead Sea.

Many unique living things live in the water. The Jordan bream and Jordan barbel are fish found only here. A reptile called the Balkan terrapin also lives in the area. Some people even think early Neanderthals ate these turtles. The river ends at the Dead Sea, which is a lake below sea level.

Today, the river faces many hard jobs to stay healthy. People in Israel, Jordan, and Syria use much of the water. They use it for things like farming and drinking. In 1964, Israel built a station to move water to the coast. Jordan also built a channel to move water from the Yarmouk River. Because so much water is used, the Dead Sea is shrinking fast.
