John Polanyi was a famous chemist.

He was born in Germany in 1929. His family moved to Britain in 1933. During World War II, he lived in Canada to stay safe. Later, he became a professor at the University of Toronto.

John studied chemical kinetics. This is the study of how fast chemical changes happen. He wanted to see how molecules move and react. He used a way called chemiluminescence. This is when a molecule gives off light during a change. By looking at this light, he could see how energy moves.

In 1986, John won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. This is a very big honor for scientists. He also used a tool called a scanning tunneling microscope. This tool lets scientists see things at a tiny level. It helps them watch reactions between single atoms.

John also cared about peace. He helped start a group called Pugwash. This group works to stop wars and nuclear weapons. He spent many years speaking about science and world peace.
