Mills was celebrated for his ability to portray the British "everyman." This means he often played characters that felt like regular, relatable people. He was particularly skilled at playing guileless or wounded war heroes. His performances brought a sense of truth and kindness to the screen. This talent earned him many of the highest honors in the film industry.

His path to stardom began with diverse early experiences. Born in 1908 in North Elmham, Norfolk, he was the son of a mathematics teacher and a theatre box office manager. He first experienced the excitement of performing during a school concert at age six. Before finding success in London, he held several different jobs. He worked as a clerk for a corn merchant in Ipswich. Later, he served as a commercial traveller for the Sanitas Disinfectant Company. His professional acting debut occurred in 1929 at the London Hippodrome.

Acting was a global endeavor for the young performer. He joined a theatrical company that toured through India, China, and the Far East. While performing in Singapore, the famous playwright Noël Coward saw him in a production of *Journey's End*. Coward was so impressed that he wrote Mills a letter of introduction. This helped Mills secure work back in London. He soon appeared in Coward's productions, including *Coward's Cavalcade* and *Words and Music*. He also made his film debut in 1932 in the movie *The Midshipmaid*.

During the Second World War, Mills balanced his acting with military service. He enlisted in the British Army in September 1939. He joined the Royal Engineers and was later commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. However, his military career was interrupted in 1942. He received a medical discharge due to a stomach ulcer. Even during this time, he occasionally filmed movies while on leave. One notable performance during this era was in the hit film *In Which We Serve* (1942).

Mills eventually reached the height of his stardom through several major roles. His popularity grew with the 1943 film *We Dive at Dawn*, which focused on submariners. In 1946, he played Pip in the film *Great Expectations*. This movie was the third largest hit at the British box office that year. During that same period, Mills was voted the sixth most popular star. He also starred in the 1948 biopic *Scott of the Antarctic*. This film was the fourth most-watched movie in Britain that year.

His career was marked by significant professional achievements and awards. In 1971, he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He received this honor for his role in *Ryan's Daughter*. In this film, he played a village idiot, which was a major departure from his usual roles. In 1976, Queen Elizabeth II knighted him for his contributions to film. This gave him the title "Sir." He also received a BAFTA Fellowship in 2002 and was named a Disney Legend.

Acting was a shared passion within his family. His sister, Annette Mills, was a well-known BBC television presenter. His daughter, Hayley Mills, also became a successful actress. They appeared in several films together, including *The Chalk Garden* and *The Truth About Spring*. Sir John Mills left a lasting mark on the world of cinema. In 1985, his handprints were preserved in Leicester Square, London.
