His career spanned several decades of significant work in theatre and cinema. He was known for his ability to portray a wide range of characters. Redgrave worked on major stages in London and traveled internationally. He performed in countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Russia, and the United States. His dedication to the craft earned him numerous prestigious honors. These included a Best Actor award at the 4th Cannes Film Festival in 1951.

Redgrave's professional process often involved both acting and directing. At Cranleigh School, he directed students in plays like Hamlet and King Lear. However, he also played every leading role himself. Later, he became a member of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre company. There, he performed in roles such as Prospero in The Tempest and King Lear. He also directed productions like Henry IV Part Two. This ability to manage both performance and direction defined much of his career.

His career included many different types of theatrical productions. He participated in the inaugural season of the Royal National Theatre. In 1962, he performed in the opening season at the Chichester Festival Theatre. He played the title role in Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. This production was directed by Laurence Olivier. Redgrave also worked in opera, directing productions like Werther and La bohème for the Glyndebourne Festival Opera. He even adapted literary works, such as the Henry James novella The Aspern Papers, for the stage.

Redgrave's early life provided a foundation for his artistic path. He was born in Bristol, England, in 1908. His parents were both involved in acting. His mother, Margaret Scudamore, was an actress. His father, Roy Redgrave, was a silent film actor. Redgrave attended Clifton College in Bristol. He later studied modern languages and English at Magdalene College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge, he edited an avant-garde literary magazine called The Venture. He graduated with a third-class degree in 1931.

His film career reached major milestones through collaborations with famous directors. He made his film debut in 1938 in The Lady Vanishes. This film was directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

In this movie, he was the first to hum the "Colonel Bogey March" on screen. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in 1947. This nomination was for his performance in Mourning Becomes Electra. He also received two BAFTA nominations for Best British Actor during the 1950s.

Redgrave faced significant personal and physical challenges during his life. During World War II, he served as an ordinary seaman in the Royal Navy. He was discharged in 1942 due to medical reasons. In the 1960s, he began to experience the effects of incipient Parkinson's disease. This condition made some performances difficult. In 1971, he experienced memory issues during a production at the Mermaid Theatre. He noted that these challenges made learning new plays very hard. Despite these obstacles, he continued to act on stage until 1979.

His legacy continues to impact the world of education and performing arts. In 1966, Redgrave opened a theatre at Clifton College. It was the first purpose-built school theatre in the country.
