He was known for playing an "everyman," which means he felt like a regular person that audiences could relate to. He often portrayed brave but wounded heroes in stories about war. Because he was so talented, he appeared in more than 120 different films. His work made him a beloved star in Britain and around the world. People loved him because he brought a sense of kindness and truth to his roles.

His journey into acting began with small steps and many different jobs. He was born in 1908 in North Elmham, Norfolk, to a teacher and a theater manager. As a young boy, he felt the thrill of performing at a school concert. Before he was a star, he worked as a clerk for a corn merchant. He even worked as a traveling salesman for a disinfectant company. Eventually, he moved to London to start his professional acting career in 1929. He even traveled to places like India and China to perform plays with a touring company.

During the Second World War, Mills put his acting on hold to serve his country. He joined the British Army in September 1939 as a member of the Royal Engineers. He worked as a Second Lieutenant for a short time. However, in 1942, he had to leave the army because of a stomach ulcer. Even while serving, he sometimes made movies when he was on leave from the military. This period of his life was a mix of duty to his country and his passion for the screen.

As his career grew, Mills reached many incredible milestones and won great prizes. In 1971, he won an Academy Award, also called an Oscar, for Best Supporting Actor. He won this for his role in the film Ryan's Daughter, where he played a village idiot. This was a big change from his usual hero roles. In 1976, Queen Elizabeth II knighted him for his work in film. This meant he was given the title "Sir." He also received a BAFTA Fellowship in 2002 and was named a Disney Legend.

Acting was a family affair for the Mills family. His sister, Annette Mills, was a famous presenter on BBC Television. His daughter, Hayley Mills, also became a very successful actress. They even shared the screen by appearing in movies together, such as The Chalk Garden. You can still see the mark he left on the world of cinema today. In 1985, his handprints were placed in Leicester Square in London.
